Dry granulation

Dry granulation is a simple and low cost method, once extremely common and again becoming more popular because of its simplicity and cost efficiency. Dry granulation helps to increase the size of granules within powders, making it easier to form them into tablets or capsules. It also leads to dense and stable formulations for use in filling capsules.

Technical information

Dry granulation is a practical choice in many cases but there are a number of technical issues to bear in mind. In particular, repeated cycles of granulation and compression can reduce “tabletability”, leading to potential waste under some circumstances. Process stages

Dry granulation has fewer process stages than Wet granulation. First the different ingredients are weighed and combined in the required proportions, and then the resulting mixture is compressed by roller compaction (slugging) for the first time. This results in sheets of compressed material, which are then milled into granules of exactly the agreed density, before being lubricated and compressed into the desired final form.
